SARAI Gallery is delighted to announce its return to The Armory Show halls for the third time, this year with a solo presentation by Iranian artist Abbas Nasle Shamloo (b. 1983) who has been known for his faux-representational landscapes using a restrained palette and a great deal of virtuosity where each scene becomes a formal container for deeper, underlying themes. An artist with deep concerns for his homeland's rapidly disappearing natural resources, Nasle Shamloo addresses our modern alienation from nature. His mysterious vistas are characterized by a significant dual absence: human figures and sunlight. Muted natural light plays a dominant role in defining the atmosphere of the paintings, bringing a quiet and timeless aspect. His imagined natural scenes are built out of long meditative walks through nature, taking visual notes, keen observations of his immediate environment, and creative processes involving various methods of addition and removal to reflect materiality and time. Nasle Shamloo's visions of post-developmental beauty yield a part-metaphysical image that inspires introspection and, perhaps, reconsideration of our relationship with nature.
