The close-up of the face of the sportsman, just before receiving a blow, invokes an extraordinary display of kinetic energy in this painting. Ali Zakeri directs the viewers’ eye movment, which start from the boxing glove in continuous short and thick brushstrokes; next a face appears, bearing signs of its final moment of stability in vivid reds and oranges and yellows and brown and dark red shades with high contrast; after that a rough, horizontal line which stretches till the right corner of the painting. By arranging all this in a black background with traces of the palette knife marks here and there, he creates a tragic situation for the subject of this painting. At the same time, the subject’s last gaze is directed forward (towards the viewer) in an atmosphere where the shimmer of his eyes is destined to soon grow dim.
