Regardless of whether we consider the educational system of a country as ideological or not (which in this case it indeed is), the modern educational structure and schools as modern institutions are structures base upon order and discipline. According to Foucault’s famous analysis, schools as institutions are comparable to prisons and hospitals which are analogous to governments, and their foundations are based on subordinating lives and bodies. The word drill itself ironically shows how close educational and military worlds can get. Military drill is the act of submitting oneself to an authority. The students in this work are busy doing their drills just like obedient soldiers. The atmosphere is dark and cold; the faces are vague and unrecognizable; gestures are repetitive and similar to the point that the faces and figures of the pupils at the back of the classroom are hatched under the overpowering shadow of the space.
