Light is one of the key characters of this series by Moslem Khezri. Sometimes the emphasis on the light-and-shadow play is so strong in these drawings and paintings that it impacts the depicted figures. In most of the drawings and paintings of the series, the drama of light beams and the chiaroscuro space they create is highlighted, including in this painting where one cannot say for sure whether the sunshine and reflection of light are the main protagonists or the painted student. The atmosphere of the classroom and the characters derive their meaning, more than anything, from an external force, that is the light ray. This visual strategy, which has been employed in most of the works of the series, is a way to highlight particular conditions and moments which may not attract our attention in the first glance. The light shining on the student’s face while at the same time marginalizing others, has turned the visual contrast into a dramatic one, in the sense that by focusing light on the facial expressions of this student, it has placed him in the center of visual attention, and thus, the painter has highlighted the singularity of someone’s presence.
