Tair Salakhov(Tahir Salahov), one of the most famous artists of the cultural thaw under Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev during the 1950s and 1960s, passed away from pneumonia in a Berlin clinic on 21 May.
He was born in Baku, Azerbaijan (29 November 1928). His father Teymur Salakhov was a victim of Stalin's repressions. Tair studied at the Azimzade Art School in Baku in 1945-1950 and the Surikov Moscow Art Institute in 1951-1957. He became a powerful figure on the Soviet art scene as first secretary of the Union of Artists of the USSR and later the vice president of the Russian Academy of Arts. He was also one of the leading representatives of the so-called "severe style".
Salakhov's genre compositions, are based on the life of Baku oil workers. Portraits, still lifes and industrial landscapes, are also recurring subjects in his art. His paintings are characterized by monumental, graphically precise forms, strict, rhythmic composition, and tense colors.
He had numerous exhibitions in Istanbul, Baku, Moscow, Prague, Washington, Madrid etc.
